1. How Do You Know Their Presence?

In actual fact, the key in controlling cockroaches in a house is cleanliness which may be difficult to achieve in houses where there are children or pets.

Nevertheless, a clean house does not mean it will be free of cockroaches but the condition would be difficult for them to establish colonies.

To manage cockroaches in an isolated house like bungalow would be easier as compared to linked houses where cockroaches have easy access from adjacent cockroach colonies.

The presence of nymphs, adults, egg cases (oothecae), faeces and secretions of cockroaches in a house is an indication of a well-established colony.

2. Insecticides Spray

Description: This is the most commonly used control method.

Property owners either do it themselves by using aerosol insecticide spray purchased from the market or engaged a pest control operator to routinely spray for cockroaches as well as other insect pests.

Pros: This method will provide a fast or quick knock-down of cockroaches that are sprayed on.

Cons: As most of the cockroaches are hiding in the daytime, insecticide spray will miss majority of them.

3. Non-Poison Traps

Description: There are some non-poison cockroach traps that you could purchase in the open market.

They are either in the form of physical traps or sticky board traps which are meant to be placed in cockroaches frequent areas.

Pros: No chemicals are used in these traps so they are considered very safe to human and environmentally friendly.

Cons: Not so effective especially if there is cockroach outbreak. Placement of traps must be very strategic. Even though it manage to trap some, the majority of them still hiding somewhere in a house.

4. Ready-To-Use Bait

Description: There are several brands of Ready-To-Use cockroach bait available in the market.

They come in round plastic casing form where a palatable poison bait was placed in the middle with openings at its sides.

These Ready-To-Use baits are supposed to be stuck at places which are frequented by cockroaches.

Pros: Quite effective to get rid of cockroaches inside the house. The size of the casing enable it to be fixed on secluded areas and tight corners which are the hiding places for cockroaches.

Cons: Might not be able to solve a cockroach outbreak. Might not be able to effectively control cockroaches which are residing outside of house for example inside a septic tank.

5. Gel Bait

Description: There are several brands of Cockroach Gel Bait that contained inside a syringe applicator but only meant for professionals used only.

Cockroach Gel Bait is applied through the syringe applicator on to areas frequented by cockroaches, for example cracks and crevices on wall, under and behind electrical devices, inside corners of kitchen cabinet, walls of septic tanks and manholes, and so on.

Pros: A more direct and effective method of controlling cockroaches even though there are outbreaks.

Its application flexibility also allow it to be applied not only indoor but also for outdoor applications like inside septic tanks and sewers.

This method also rely on the cannibalistic behaviour of cockroaches where healthy cockroaches would eat up dead or dying poisoned cockroaches.

By doing so, the healthy ones would also be killed due to secondary poisoning, thus creating a domino effect that eventually wipe out the whole cockroaches residing in your house.

Cons: You could not do it yourself as Cockroach Gel Bait could not be purchased in the open market. It is only meant to be used by well-trained pest operators only.
